You don’t Need to Meditate to get the Benefits

Meditation is not for everyone: How to enjoy reducing your stress

Let’s be honest, when we think of stress management we think of “meditation”. We picture monks sitting cross-legged chanting, and we just can’t picture ourselves doing that. But there are still many different ways to get the benefits of meditation. They are almost as helpful, and most of them are not sitting silently trying to empty our minds.
For example, you can get the same results from listening to music. The trick is to sit still and let it take you. Any music – just pick something that you enjoy. But you have to really listen to it. It doesn’t count if you are driving and dodging traffic. You have to be really listen. What do you like about it? The quality of the singers voice, the different instruments, the words? How does it make you feel: sad, angry, lighthearted, nostalgic? If you can lose yourself in your own unique way, you will get the benefits.
Another good way to lose yourself is to call a friend and have a chat about life, the universe and everything. The key is don’t let the conversation be about you and your problems. Most people like to talk about themselves, so just give your friend a chance. This has at the added benefit that you get caught up with a friend. After all, how long has it been since you talked to the people that you say are “good” friends?
Here’s another meditation that works: Pick up a camera and go for a walk, think like an artist and find commonplace items that you like. Consider composure, light and shadow, color, or just unique angles. I used to enjoy taking picture of palm trees. I thought it was silly and foolish until I happened upon a photography exhibit of a famous photographer, and what do you think all his pictures were of? That’s right, palm trees! So think like an artist or a documentarian and go for it. There is a great website that is growing rapidly called “pinerest.com” and it’s nothing more than people posting pictures and creating photo albums. It’s a free website that allows you to create a bunch of different online photo albums. You can look up other people’s albums by topic, or see if any of your friends have Pinerest accounts. Nevertheless, you can come up with a dozen “meditative” ideas on your own, just think of something that you can do (or not do) for 15 minutes to several hours that is NOT task oriented. Remember to focus on the journey and not the destination.

Hi, I just happened to come…But, I like what you say about really listening to the music thing. I enjoy meditating, but I also like to really listen music so that I feel that I can be one with the music!
